It occurs to me that my current DD won't last forever. And I've started thinking about what to get if/when the Galant bites the dust.
What about an older luxury coupe? Something comfy that's taken a nice depreciation hit. My "fun" car is complicated and German, so I might want to balance that out with something more sedate and Japanese.
Keep in mind, I don't need a track car that will blow the doors off an M3. I need a commuter car. Something that will get decent gas mileage, not require too much costly maintenance, and get me to and from work in comfort and, if possible, style.
I present to you the following choices. Yes, they're both automatics and beige, and I'm A-OK with that.
Option #1 - 2003 Acura 3.2CL. 89,106 miles. $7,295.
Option #2 - 2000 Lexus SC300. 82,471 miles. $5,995.

Really. Any other color.

Transmission in the CL cannot be trusted. Avoid.

I saw more Lexus, Acura and Infiniti on the road in the week I stayed in Reston then my whole life up to that point.

the 2Jz is barely being broken in at 80K, such a bullet proof engine (ex Lexus Master tech) :] But, i'd go with the Acura, better over all ride quality, power, comfort, and performance. That car was champ (before their unfortunate downhill swing). Haggle the price as much as you can

I always liked the CL, great looking car, Honda reliability, etc. Can't you find a TypeS for around the same. And I'm ok with the auto, but there have to be other colors!

SC300 because you can make it hella jdm yo with overnight parts from japan.

Meh, doesn't much matter to me. Gold/tan/beige (whatever you want to call it) doesn't show dirt as easily, and it's always a little bit cheaper in the used market.

I'd say go with the Lexus. It'll be much more comfortable, much more reliable, and should you decide you want to have a little bit of fun, it's better suited to that.

As much as I love CLs watch that tranny once you get around 100,000. The engine will last forever and you will not really have much other problems than probably the transmission. It is a toss up for me.

Non Sequitur:
Did you know that Reston VA was the site of the only outbreak of Ebola in the US? And that particular strain, Ebola Reston, is nearly 100% fatal, but so far hasn't jumped to humans.
We were [] close to being obliterated.

I had an '02 CL Type S. I really did love that car. Very comfortable and never had a single problem. Of course, that was only over ~60k miles. I sold it to a guy locally, and ran into him 2 years later. He said he was at 85k, and still 0 issues.
I do worry about those transmissions, though, just on reputation alone.
I've never even been in a Lexus, so I have nothing to add there.

I would have said the CL too, but I wasn't aware of the transmission issues. I think I'd have to take the SC.

This. Why? Because flex-fue.

I DD a 2000 3.2TL so pretty much the same as the CL. I'd suggest you find a Type-S while you're at it because if I remember correctly, the non-Type S cars have failing transmissions sooner or later.

Agreed. I have an '01 TL. Great car and running strong with 120,000+ miles, except that damn transmission. It's been rebuilt twice now.

Just naming after location. The outbreak occurred in a monkey-house, among a shipment from Africa.
As they studied it, they noticed it was slightly different than the other strains of Ebola, hence the new name.
Guess I should have studied a bit more before I posted. It's not that deadly, and that particular instance the monkeys had another infection which caused them to die.

SC, SC, SC, SC, SC!!!
Mine lasted until 210k even with getting beating on, and only broke because I crashed it drifting. Great car, would recommend.
Also, its RWD, is this even a comparison?

What ever you get, don't get a first gen Mini Cooper with sport suspension.

Putting my BMW away as well this month, and was about to get a CL when I read the comments, so need to look around for a CL type S now..

I had a 97 Acura 2.2 CL for 5 1/2 years and I'll give credit where credit's due. 179k when I sold it on the original clutch. I owned it from 80 ish to the 179k and I replaced a wheel bearing, re did the brakes, tires, radiator and....right before I sold it I did the starter & clutch master cylinder. I'd say that's pretty damn good, especially since this was during HS and college and I wasn't loving her like I should.

I vote SC. My big boss has a '94 with about a quarter million miles. It's still clean and tight, reliable, and honestly one of the few designs from the 90's chiclet era that I think still looks good.
